About the Author

Mao Tun, the penname of Shen Ye-Ping (1896-1981), was a famed Chinese author whose literary career extended from the 1920’s New Culture movement to the beginning of market reforms in the early 1980s. Mao Tun’s work criticized the political status-quo in China, depicting the revolutionary struggle taking place amidst the chaotic years after the fall of the Qing Dynasty. After the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Mao Tun was elected to the National People’s Congress and served on other consultative government bodies. Although purged during the Cultural Revolution, he was later rehabilitated and remains one of China’s most well regarded authors of the 20th century.
