Celebrating Jin Yong’s 90th Birthday

90 years ago on this day famed Wuxia novelist Jin Yong (real name Zha Liangyong) was born in Zhejiang, China.

It is difficult to overstate Jin Yong’s influence on the world of Chinese fiction. Despite only writing from 1955 to 1972, Jin Yong’s books have sold over 100 million copies to this date and many have been turned into movies and television shows. An asteroid even bears his name.

A definitive characteristic of Jin Yong’s Wuxia work is the relationship between ethnic Han Chinese and minority peoples in Western China. His early writing focused on periods of Chinese history in which China was threatened by groups like the Jurchen, Mongols and Manchus. Later, he used these same groups to paint a more inclusive vision of a multi-ethnic China in his novels.

Jin Yong’s influence is seen in much of the Wuxia fiction we publish through our China Books imprint. F. Lit Yu, author of our Snow Wolf series (Reincarnation and Redemption), places much of the action in his novels on the China-Mongolia border. One of the main characters, Suthachai, is also a Mongolian warrior.

If you’re interested in Wuxia fiction check out our product pages for the Snow Wolf series here and here.  While very little of Jin Yong’s work has been translated into English, we are able to get the original Chinese versions from China. If you have a particular title you’re interested in don’t hesitate to contact us.
