Oriental Animation & Comic Competition
"OACC 2008"
Looking at most of the really good Chinese language comic books that we have samples of here in the office, I've come to realize that the Oriental Animation & Comic Competition (OACC) (东方原创动华艺术大赛) is pretty much the deciding competition, where new tallent can emerge in China. Most of the best comic artists in China today won it in previous years.
So after a little looking, I've found their website. If you're a comic artist, it's got the rules and regulations in Chinese (although it's an international competition open to anyone who does comics in Chinese), as well as a list of previous winners etc. The site's all in Chinese, but the layout isn't so hard on the eyes.
Dude, I'm so going to apply for this.

Chinese Comic Fans-today is your lucky day!
"JiDi's Website"
We finally got in some copies of Ji Di’s first book, My Way 1. I just read it on the airplane coming back from China yesterday, and it’s great. It’s readable, the stories are dark, sad and yet a little funny; the art is superlatively cool.
If you haven’t read any of her books, and you’re a comic book fan, this will blow your roof off.
Also her website: http://www.blogcn.com/user32/zyl622/blog/27105844.html
Stay posted on the latest trends on comics in China. I have to catch up on some work and then...fun!!!

Siu Hak, awsome Hong Kong comic artist, has Blog
"Siu Hak's fan blog"
Recently, our Marketing Director went to Hong Kong; she offered to bring back anything we want. I askded for information about emerging comic artists. She brought back Siu Hak, whose work is beautiful, edgy and political. The fan blog of the work can be seen here: http://siuhakfans.blogspot.com/Thanks Chellis!

Oh My Gawd!!!! I'm so excited!!!!!
"Comics in Chinese"
Guess what!?!!! Many of our new comics arrived from China today!!!! This means that we can start sending you our quality books by Ji Di, Wan Wan and San Mao.
But seriously, folks, this is so exciting. Until today, the only place you could get these books was at specialty bookstores in Chinatown, and even then they were hidden in the back (trust me, I know where they keep the cool comics in the Chinatown bookstores, and it is not anywhere where you can find it).
Your homework? Forget it, tell your teacher your reading comics in Chinese. For those of you who aren't such strong readers, I suggest one of Jimi's books (see "The Fish that Smiled at Me" below), for stronger readers why don't you try one of Wan Wan's books (our review of her blog can be seen here under the Comics in Chinese) and for those of you who don't speak Chinese, why don't you try the WW2 comic "Three Hairs" (San Mao).

Sucidal Bunny Parodies PRC
Washington Post: "'Suicide Rabbit' Portrays the Million Little Abuses of Daily Life, but Shuns Domestic Politics"
Those of us who live in this "pluralistic democracy" of the USA like to deride our fellow humans in the PRC for not having any political freedom...well one very little sucidal cartoon bunny has been making a lot of criticism about China lately.

The substance they're digging is coal.
Yes, that's his dead roommate/friend on the bed.
Quite a novel way to kill yourself.
For those of you who can read Chinese, check out You Shou's blog. For those of you who can't, you can read about it in the Washington Post.

Dog-obsessed Hipsters in Taiwan?
"Wan Wan's Blog!"
Sean's new favorite comic book is by this Taiwanese cartoon blogger Wan Wan. Her self deprecating comics will make you recognize the couch-potato slacker in your self. (I know I feed my dog instant noodles because I forget to buy dog food all the time!)
The blog and original comics shown on it are in Traditional characters and written all cutesy, so, for us non-native speakers, it's good practice. Oh and did I mention that she has free downloadable avatars for IM-ing? So you can be cute and hip!

My Way author's blog found!
"Click here to check out Ji Di's website!"
Soon, very soon (I promise!) China Books will be getting in Jidi's amazing books My Way 1, My way 2 and My Way 3. The author has a blog! And she writes all the time!
To view her blog in mandarin, you will have to click on the "View" menu at the top of the screen, and switch over to "Simplified Mandarin" encoding, because she does not have this set up in unicode. But there's lots of pretty pictures to look at, and lots of very angsty blog entries to read in mandarin.
